Solutions for the common challenges

The Baltic Sea challenge is so broad that it requires international collaboration to recover the sea.

During WaterChain project various methods were jointly piloted with partners in the Central Baltic area to reduce the harmful load of nutrients and hazardous substances to the Baltic Sea. The load originates from various sources and includes several hazardous substances in addition to nutrients. Therefore, multiple approaches and measures at different levels are required to reach the most efficient outcome enabling the Baltic Sea to recover in the future.

In addition to the best practices among technological measures for the reduction of nutrients and hazardous substances, awareness raising plays a key role – every act counts, no matter how small it might be. In a wider perspective, the developed strategic approaches to the load reduction provide sustainable tools for policy makers, farmers, festival organizers, water works and wastewater treatment plants.
